4 September 2007
End-of Year Report
Council on General Education
AY 2006-2007
Meeting Schedule and Summary of Primary Duties
The Council on General Education (CGE) met only sporadically during the year, as needed, since most of its business was on hold until the work of the General Education Review Committee (GERC) has been completed. A summary of our actions can be found below.
Membership
This year抯 new members gained little experience in CGE business, unless they attended GERC meetings or had prior CGE experience (as at least two did). This means that in 2007-08, when many members involved in CGE since the formation of GERC have cycled off CGE, there will be a significant learning curve for many members when CGE business (including implementation of any changes to Gen Ed) resumes. However, the leadership of CGE will be in the hands of a highly experienced chair, and a few new and continuing members have been heavily involved in GERC and/or in past CGE work. In addition, the ex officio members from Advising, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Provost抯 Office help sustain historical memory in CGE deliberations.
Election of New Officers
Officers for AY 2007-08 are Phyllis Farley Rippey (chair) and Amy Carr (vice chair).
Duties Related to General Education Curriculum
Biology 102/103 Changes
Despite the 揻reeze on considering new courses for Gen Ed, CGE recommended acceptance of 搉ew courses Bot 200 (formerly Biol 102) and Zool 200 (formerly Biol 103) as Gen Ed courses, because the new courses are tantamount to the original courses.
Faculty Senate Charges to the Council on General Education
and Council Recommendations
Foreign Language/Global Issues Ad Hoc Committee
In spring 2007, CGE members selected David Haugen and Kathleen O扗onnell-Brown to serve on the 2007-08 Foreign Languages/Global Issues ad hoc committee.
Transfer of AAT (Science) Students
CGE recommended accepting an Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) request to require no more than one additional course in the humanities and in the social sciences (for a total of TWO additional courses) for students transferring in with an Associate of Arts in Teaching (science specialization) degree. This request would mean that AAT science degree students would not be required to complete WIU抯 General Education requirements in Human Well Being and Multicultural Education. AAT students take a rigorous program of courses in the sciences (unlike students in two-year degree programs that focus more on technical skills), so these students are lacking in the social sciences and humanities courses otherwise required for the completion of the General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) that permits many students with associates degrees to waive WIU抯 Gen Ed requirements. The Senate approved the recommendation.
Catalogue Language on 揇iscipline and 揇epartments
The Council was asked to make a recommendation to the General Education Review Committee regarding the confusion caused by references in the catalogue description of the general education requirement to both 揹isciplines and 揹epartments. Requirements limit student choice of courses in an area to no more than two courses in any one discipline. In at least one place in the catalogue, there is reference to a requirement that students may take no more than two courses in any one 揹epartment. Taken literally, this could prohibit students from taking two courses in sociology and two courses in anthropology because both disciplines happen to be housed in one department. CGE recommended to GERC that the catalogue language be changed to state, 揝tudents may take no more than two courses from any one grouping below, and to make clear that courses should be listed in the catalogue groupings so that disciplines such as sociology and anthropology would be grouped separately and disciplines (here, subfields) within the department of Biology would be grouped together. GERC heartily accepted this proposed change.
Respectfully submitted by Amy Carr, CGE chair for AY 2006-2007.
